Hannah Rae

Textile Artist

My work is inspired by the spaces, places and objects that surround me, both natural and manmade, and reflects a personal intuitive response to my environment and the effect of time on surface.  I am concerned with watching and observing the passage of time and the fragility in things, through their breakdown and evolution from weathering and ageing:  That wonderful inherent beauty that comes with the oxidation of metals; the decay of weathered wood; the fading and muting of sun-bleached colours.

Having recently relocated to Woodbridge, I find myself observing the ebb and flow of the tide in the River Deben, the change it brings minute by minute, day by day, month by month.  I am watching and recording and am sure that this will inform my work in the months to come.

Much of my work is created with collage and is characterised by a use of used and repurposed materials (vintage and second-hand linens and clothing) which are revived with dye, paint and printed elements and detailed stitching to bring a sense of renewal and rejuvenation to each piece.
